Balqees’s Journey: From Despair to Determination
In a world where dreams are too often shattered by betrayal and hardship, Balqees’s story shines as a testament to the strength of the human spirit. What began as a promise of opportunity took a dark turn when a trusted member of her community lured her away with the promise of a bright future in London. Instead, Balqees found herself trapped in Lebanon, her passport confiscated, forced into grueling labor for meager pay by a Lebanese family.

A Promise That Wasn’t Kept
In 2019, Balqees was offered what seemed like the chance to build a better life. With hope in her heart, she embarked on a journey, believing that she was headed for London, a city known for its opportunities and promise. However, upon arrival in Lebanon, reality struck hard. Her dreams were abruptly replaced by the harsh reality of modern-day slavery. Confined by a binding contract and isolated from her loved ones, Balqees faced not only exploitation but also the crushing weight of betrayal by someone she had trusted.
The Dark Days of Captivity
As the pandemic swept the globe in 2020, Balqees’s isolation grew even more profound. Trapped in a system designed to keep her subjugated, she yearned for home, for Nigeria the place where her family’s love and support could help mend her shattered spirit. Yet, every attempt to return was met with resistance. The contract, like an unyielding chain, seemed to ensure that her escape was impossible. In the midst of uncertainty and despair, Balqees’s courage was tested in ways no one should ever have to endure.
A Spark of Hope in the Darkness
One ordinary day, while listening to a live broadcast, a small moment of connection in her lonely world, Balqees gathered the strength to ask for help. That plea for salvation did not go unheard. Amanda, our visionary CEO, saw Balqees’s desperate message and was moved to act. With compassion and determination, Amanda, alongside a Nigerian artist residing in the United States, embarked on what would become a daring rescue mission. Their hearts and minds set on liberating Balqees from the clutches of modern day trafficking, they navigated all of the legal, logistical, and emotional challenges to bring her home.
The Long Road Home
October 2020 marked a turning point. After an arduous and uncertain journey, Balqees finally returned to Nigeria, reunited with her family and enveloped in a warmth that had been missing for far too long. The experience of being trafficked, of living as a modern day slave, is something she will carry with her forever. Yet, rather than let this traumatic chapter define her, Balqees chose to transform her pain into a driving force for change.
New Beginnings: A Stitch in Time
Back on Nigerian soil, Balqees began rebuilding her life from the ground up. With the help of our organization, she received not only physical and legal support but also the emotional rehabilitation and therapy essential for healing. Today, Balqees is the proud owner of her own sewing shop on the bustling mainland of Lagos. Each stitch she sews is a testament to her resilience, a quiet yet powerful rebellion against the forces that once tried to silence her.
Her dream, however, stretches even further. Balqees hopes to one day open her own sewing academy, a place where young girls can learn the art of sewing and designing, transforming their lives through creativity and self reliance. In sharing her skills and her story, she aspires to empower others, ensuring that no young woman has to endure the loneliness and despair she once knew.
